Ensyn’s technology is currently operating in six biomass facilities in North America. Ensyn’s plant in Renfrew, Ontario is its first facility dedicated to the production of advanced cellulosic biofuels. The Renfrew plant has been in operation since 2006, focused primarily on production of liquids for chemicals and heating fuels. In addition, Ensyn has used the Renfrew facility to demonstrate and commercialize its biofuels business.
Ensyn is currently expanding and converting the Renfrew facility to a dedicated RFO™ biofuels facility. Commercial production from the plant is being directed to heating oil clients in the Northeastern US and in Quebec under term contracts. Capacity is also being reserved to develop new clients and markets for new projects Ensyn and its partners are developing in the US and Canada in the heating oil and coprocessing sectors.
In March, 2014, Ensyn announced the first multi-year contract from this facility, a five-year contract to supply product to Memorial Hospital in North Conway, New Hampshire for heating purposes.
Production capacity is scheduled to increase to three million gallons/year by mid-2014. Production will continue unimpeded during expansion work. By enhancing its existing Renfrew facility, Ensyn has exercised a fast-to-market option to satisfy immediate demand.
Ensyn’s Renfrew facility has been qualified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the US Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS2) program. Sales of RFO from Renfrew to US clients are expected to be eligible for Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs), enhancing the value proposition of the US contracts.

The Renfrew expansion was partially financed by a $1.5 million grant from Ontario’s Centre for Research and Innovation in the Bio-Economy (CRIBE), a provincial initiative to transform the forest products industry in Northern Ontario.
