 In the 1990s, recognizing that Ensyn’s RTP™ process was a robust technology, the petroleum industry approached Ensyn to work on upgrading heavy crude oil through pyrolysis.
Ensyn sold the commercialized version of this proprietary heavy oil upgrading process to Ivanhoe Energy in 2005 for an enterprise value of $100 million. Ivanhoe uses the process – now known as HTL – to significantly improve existing reserves of oil.
